I have death certificate for Enoch Davies. My g.g. grandfather's name was Enoch Davies. He appears in the 1841 and 1861 Census, although not in the 1851 Census.

In the 1871 Census, his wife, my g. g. grandmother Eleanor (Ellen) is recorded as a Widow, therefore Enoch died between 1861 and 1871.

The only death of an Enoch Davies in that area between these dates, to which the above certificate relates is on 20th, May 1864.

Now here is my problem, the informant is a Sarah Davies, present at his death and resident in Wrockwardine.

There is no Sarah Davies as one of my ancestors until 1881.

Checking the 1861 Census I find a Sarah Davies as wife of Moses Davies, with a son Enoch.

To summarise Enoch was born in 1815 and Moses in 1816. I wonder if Enoch and Moses could be brothers and Moses son named after his uncle and Sarah, present at Enoch's death, his sister-in-law.

I also wonder why Enoch's wife, Eleanor wasn't present at his death.

Is there any way of getting to the bottom of this ?

Hello Mel, I think I may have found Enoch and his family in the 1851 census.

There is an Enoch Davies living at Wellington, born 1802. His place of birth is described as Longwood, which is very close to Uppington (as described by Enoch as his place of birth in 1861)

He is described as a coal hewer.

His wife in the 1851 census is Elenor Davies. She is described as being born at "Washington, Shropshire" but this is merely a mistranscription of "Withington" ( as in the 1861 census).

Hope this helps!

Sorry, just realised that your Enoch was born 1815, so ignore the above! Jason

Thanks for trying Jason - I wonder where Enoch could have been in 1851 - perhaps he was in the pub or down the mine and perhaps the census officers were not as diligent then in making sure they found everyone. It's his birth/baptism I'm really interested in

Hi Mel, where did he say his birthplace was in the 1861 census? I'm going to the archives in Shrewsbury tomorrow (Wednesday) before heading back home to Leeds so could perhaps have a look for a baptism record for you while I'm there.
