I am trying to find the mother and father of James Bullock 1817/20 I have read that he may have been a gardener at Benthall Hall but he went on to be a tobacco pipe maker. The article says that he married below his class to Emma Speak and his family were not happy.

It also states that they are buried at All Saints Church Wolverhampton.

I would be grateful for any information

thanks Barbie

I'd be grateful if you could advise the reference for James being a pipemaker. Is he listed as such in the Census?

This seems to be  a continuation or offshoot of the post below on BULLOCK / BAGLEY, though this is not so stated. And we have to read all that to find what information is already known to Barbara.

For more completeness the marriage of James Bullock and Emma Speak was in June quarter 1838 in Madeley Registration District, and presumably Barbara has that certificate. Presumably James' father is left blank therein; but does it state the mother? The pre-printed register of form does not, so far as I am aware, provide for a mother's name to be stated. If so, what evidence is there that the mother was indeed a Susanna?

Peter will know whether baptisms at Benthall are in the IGI after 1812. (My sampling using the ubiquitous surname of Hartshorn(e) does not assist). If there is no coverage one cannot say that a baptism there for James does not exist - as an alternative to those already in the IGI.

Next, has that entry in IGI for James son of Susanna in 1817 in St Alkmund's, Shrewsbury been checked out? If not, much time since 2007 (as noted by Steven Atcherley) has been wasted. It ought to state Susanna's then residence, though an "of this parish" or similar might be a fudge if this was an illegitimate birth.

We are not told the source of the article. More detail on this might assist us to assess its likely worth. But a comment about marrying below sounds a bit much if James was indeed illegitimate.

Would posters please note the 8 numbered points of guidance that the webmaster now gives for postings. Currently they are still honoured in the breach.

I am very sorry if i have confused people as this is all new to me and i am a novice at tracing my family tree.

Yes it is conected to the Bullock/ Bagley post.

I do not have the marriage certificate of James and Emma i have James(his son ) and Mary Jane Bates marriage certificate and it is on this that it states James snr was a pipe maker but from there i have drawn a blank and relied on people like you for information.

The article i refer to on Benthal Hall was on Pearson/Pig family tree, Notes from James' great-grandson the late Randall Lovejoy. This is why i posted again because i thought it was another avenue to go down.

Once again i am sorry if i confused anyone

Fine, Barbara.

First let us see if Peter the Loggerhead can advise on Benthall registers and the IGI. If he says that they are included after 1812 that really means looking at the St Alkmund's entry for 1817 - though it is still possible that some Anglican church or nonconformist chapel has the key and is not in the IGI.

To have the St Alkmund's entry checked you can e-mail archives@shropshire.gov.uk but as a fiche has to be got out this may take more than a "freebie" and cost you £5-00.

If on the other hand you can get to those Archives you could look also for any sort of bastardy information in Broseley or nearby parish records. For this you need a reader's ticket.

I have been pottering about Thomas Bagley, but have found nothing conclusive. One such bap in 1796 and 1798 at Broseley. What happened later to each? No sign in the SFHS Burials Index up to end 1837, but coverage is not complete. And I cannot readily from home find him in 1851 Census. Did he die in Newport (Salop) District in 1842 ? Newport might just have been the home of Susanna Bullock, and that one married there a Roberts.

But - and this still depends on whether the baptism in 1817 at St Alkmund's is the right one - that Susan(na) might have been baptised in St Alkmund's or StJulian's, as both are missing from IGI for the likely period.

Although (as I now see) Steven has quoted much detail for the 1838 marriage, I still feel that you should get the certificate as a key link in the chain. And what was Thomas Bagley's then stated occupation?

Happily, I think that you are on firmer ground with Emma Speak. It seems that the Emma Bullock in the 1861 Census was born in Cardington about 1819. And she no doubt is the Emma Speak(e) baptised both at Cardington (11.4.1820) and at Lyth Hill and Dorrington NC chapel (14.4.1820), daughter of Joseph and Sarah (nee Carter per the latter baptism - many NC registers quoted the mother's maiden name); and that couple married 6.10.1811 at Acton Burnell.

Thank you very much for this information i will try to get James Bullock snr birth certificate and go from there.

Unfortunately i don't think i could get to look at St Alkmunds Archives as i live in Stoke-on-Trent ( i know its not that far away but its getting the time) but i will defintely e-mail them.

Once again thank you

M131242 is the only post 1812 batch for Benthall and there are no Bagley or Bullock entries.
