My great-great grandfather William Alfred LEWIS was born in Shropshire (~1868)  and he married Catherine JONES. So far from the England and Wales census, I could find all his siblings: Annie, John Henry, Herbert Charles and Percy. And their parent's were Alfred (~1849) and Charity. I have no maiden name for Charity and all I could find was the marriage of Alfred LEWIS and Charity WOOD in 1867 Ludlow.

Some part of this LEWIS family moved to South Africa in ~1904 where we are still located. I do know that many of the men were coal miners.

Could anyone help me determine Alfred's parents? My one guess is William (~1822) also from Shropshire, and Mary (~1819) from Wales. And perhaps Alfred's siblings?

Hello Carmen

Are you aware that your g.g.grandfather William Alfred LEWIS baptism can be found amongst the Shropshire Baptisms on the Find my Past web site (fee payable or may be available at your local library / archives).  He was baptised on 30th August 1868 at Withington near Shrewsbury.  Parents were Alfred LEWIS (Railway Porter) and Charity of Withington.  The railway didn't actually run to Withington but there were stations at Upton Magna and Walcot, each about two miles away and Shrewsbury and Wellington stations were about five miles away.

You can check the Birth details for your g.g.grandfather William Alfred LEWIS from the General Register Office in the UK.  Click on 'order certificates online' then click ' Search the GRO ...'.  You will need to register or sign in and then click 'Search the GRO Indexes'.  At the present time you can only search Births and Deaths so select Births and fill in the details and click Search.  You will need to scroll down to see the results.  If you wish, you can order a PDF copy of the Birth Certificate, which you will be able to download after a few days - they will tell you when it is ready.

The Marriage you have found in the Ludlow Registration District between Alfred LEWIS and Charity WOOD is also available on the Find my Past web site.  It actually took place at Stanton Lacy about 2.5miles north of Ludlow.  Alfred is described as a 'Porter' so presumably on the railway which was only 2-3 miles from his home at Ludlow, Bromfield or Onibury, or a little further away at Craven Arms.  If you look up the Marriage on the FmP web site you will be able to see the signatures of your relatives.  Alfred's father William was a Shoemaker and Charity's father, also William, was an 'Agent' which would suggest a social standing a bit above average.
