This is my first attempt to get beyond the standard census records available online. I am trying to trace my great great grandfather who according to census records was born in Woore in about 1828; his mother was Hannah Lightfoot b. 1796. By 1841 they had moved to Manchester which is where my family then stayed. I have no other record of Henry's father in 1841 (his mother was 45, so he may well have passed away by then) Where might I find parish records that may have records of his birth or his parents births/deaths. Henry's grave is in Manchester but I can find no record of Hannah being buried there. Interestingly Henry's place of birth is listed as Burslem Staffs in 1871 (but Woore in 1861 & 1881), definitely the same person. Can anyone help?
David
There is a death for a Hannah Lightfoot around the right age, death being registered in Staffs? Which may coincide with the 'discrepancies' you've found in the census records for Henry...
Woore is only a stones throw to the west of Stoke on Trent and just a simple search on Ancestry shows a very high number of Lightfoots in Staffordshire. She may have been living/staying with another family member? Worth looking into perhaps but don't want to throw you off...

further research reveals that Henry was christened at St Mary's Mucklestone Staff on 2 Sep 1827 although I believe he was born in Woore in Shropshire. Where might I find a birth certificate, Staffs or Shropshire?
Many thanks
Birth Certificates were introduced in 1837 I'm afraid,
With the help of the Staffs Record Office I have been able to progress a bit further; my great great great grandfather John Lightfoot was born in Madeley in 1792 and buried at Mucklestone in 1829. I visited the area a couple of months ago to find that all the older gravestones at Mucklestone are under grass now; does anyone know if there is a record of the old gravestones held? Thank you
Hello David
The Shropshire FHS have a copy of a transcript of the Monumental Inscriptions (MIs) of Mucklestone, Staffordshire which was compiled in 1910 and covers the period 1724-1905. If you want a copy see 'Shop' (top right) then Publications Catalogue and then click on the SFHS_Publications.pdf link.
There is also a list of some Memorial Inscriptions for Mucklestone, Staffordshire on the Internet at the Wishful Thinking web site.
Unfortunately neither of the above seem to include any LIGHTFOOT entries.
Mike
Registers are at Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury:
