So very sorry to learn of the death of Martyn Freeth
I also am very saddened. He gave me much advice and information and the Society will miss his huge expertise.

Only just read email. While I never met him, he gave me some good advise several times on this forum. Will be missed on here. Angela
A sad loss indeed. Martyn was a veritable mine of information and gave so much so freely, online and offline. I met him two or three times at the Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury last year. From those meetings, from his emails and from his posts on this forum I learned that he was not only a fount of knowledge but also had a wonderful sense of humour. He will be greatly missed not only by his friends and acquaintances in the genealogical community, but also of course by his family, to whom I extend my sympathies.

Martyn was admitted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on 24 May. In early June he telephoned me because he was concerned that having arranged to meet a lady on a visit from overseas he had no way of letting her know that he would be unable to help her as promised. At that time he specifically asked that we did not put anything about his illness on this message forum. On 12th June he was transferred to University Hospital of North Staffordshire for specialist treatment but as you have heard, sadly he died on 24th June.
It was only yesterday that the details of Martyn's funeral were announced. There will be a cremation attended by family and close friends on Friday 20th July followed by a memorial service at St Eata's Church, Atcham, at 1.30pm the same day.
Martyn's extensive knowledge and his willingness to use that for the benefit of researchers posting messages on this forum will be sadly missed as well as his willingness to spend his time doing research in Shropshire Archives for those unable to get there to do their own research.

I was very saddened to hear the loss of Martyn Freeth, my deepest sympathy to his family & friends. He will be greatly missed by the society and anyone he came in to contact with in these circles.
I was exceptionally fortunate to meet Martyn for the first & only time in May this year. I was hoping to meet him again later this year but alas that is not to be.
In my short encounter with Martyn I found him to have a great sense of humour, he was so helpful in conducting research on my behalf at the archives, he was a true gentleman and my life is richer for having met him.
A very sad loss indeed.
RIP Martyn, you will be sorely missed

So sorry to hear about Martyn helped me a couple of times R I P Martyn
I am very saddened by the passing of Martyn, who personally helped me to an enormous and ever-generous extent with research.
I always greatly enjoyed reading his contributions to the Forum, and admired his wealth of knowledge whilst without exception enjoying his excellent and exquisitely tuned humour.
Finally, I am confused by the amount of time that has gone by since his sad departure - I obviously have been away from the forum for too long.
May you rest in eternal peace, Martyn, we will all miss you greatly

I'm shocked. While I only met Martin relatively recently we did share some distant ancestors and he was always willing and helpful "off board" to share his considerable knowledge.
