Hello

I am seeking info. on Mary Swanwick baptised 1721 in Ightfield. Did she marry and have children? Did she work in service, possibly as a cook? Where and when was she buried? Her parents were Joseph Swanwick and Ann nee Colley. Her brother Thomas baptised 1724 was a butcher and later a mercer in Market Drayton. He died a fairly wealthy man according to his will of 1805. But what of his sister Mary?

Chris

It appears that Mary Swanwick married John Beckerton (from Myddle) on 10 April, 1742 in Wem, and they had children Mary 1745, Thomas 1747 and Joseph 1749 (all baptized in Wem).

The difficulty in finding these records is due to the poor condition of the Wem Marriage Register around 1741 – 1742.

The marriage is transcribed on FMP as “John Brotherson married Mary Stavanweek on 10 Apr. 1741”.  However, with careful scrutiny of the register, “Stavanweek” is most likely “Swanweek”, “Brotherson” is plausibly “Beckerton” and "1741" should be "1742".  Further, the childrens’ baptisms give the surname as Backerton, Beckerton and Bickerton respectively.

Hope this helps, John.

Joseph SWANWICK married Ann Colley on April 27 1720 in Drayton-in-Hales church. Who was he? I suspect he was Joseph Swanwick bapt. 1684 in Marbury (Cheshire) near Whitchurch. But I have no good evidence for this. Perhaps there are better candidates I have missed. Can anyone help?
