Hi, I have found a strange address on the death certificate of my maternal grandmother Sarah Ann GOODFELLOW who died in the Royal Salop Infirmary on 11th Sep 1928 aged 52. Death registered by eldest son and her address is shown as 2 New Lodge, Donnington, Newport Rd. She lived for most of her life in Shawbury and so this address is distinctly strange. I have been unable to find it having driven around the district of Donnington etc. Can anyone who knows the area please give idea as to where it is or was. Thanks Michael Tench
Michael,
After sleeping on this I realise now I may have misguided you just a little, The best way I can tell you how to find this dwelling is, New Lodge lies between the Granville Colliery, Muxton Bridge and Abbey Farm on the old road.
Find Abbey Farm (Lilleshall) on a map and you are not far away.
Other thoughts are perhaps one of her many children may have worked at the Abbey Farm, this could have been a tied cottage and she was living with one of them when she died?
Regards Gulielmus.
Thanks for this Gulielmus,
I will get out my detail map of the area and locate the farm and then drive over to the area.
Although she was born in Wales and married and lived in Shawbury she had lived in Newport area in 1891 census (Howle I think from memory) so that might explain it.
Many thanks for your help.
Michael Tench
Michael;
Who was the informant on the death certificate, you may be able to work it back to one of her children with this information, Christian name or if female a marriage perhaps?
Gulielmus.
Sorry Michael have just reread your original post and see you already know who she was living with.
Gulielmus.
Michael,
Extremely doubtful if you will find any trace of this address now.
This was possibly a dwelling belonging to the Lilleshall Company for one of their coal mine workers, most of the dwellings belonged to the Lilleshall Estate.
Donnington is also rather misleading, as I recall, this area was known as Lodge Wood, also I think you are looking along the wrong Newport Road, this would more than likely be the Newport Road from St. Georges to Newport, which ran from St. Georges cross roads through Wrockwardine Wood, Lodge Wood and on to Donnington then via Lilleshall to Newport.
You can follow this route on a map prior to Telford, pre 1970. (The good old days)
Regards Gulielmus.
