Hi

I am researching Edward Perry who's death certificate lists his death cause as "due to head being but off by passing railway train at ?? Leaton". The death place is given as on or near the railway crossing at Leaton, Salop.

He was 81 so I am not sure why his head may have been cut off, I can't decipher the verdict (doesn't look like "kills himself").

Do you know where I could find a coroners report (he died 4th Jan 1929 and I think the inquest was the next day) or would it have made the local paper?

Thanks

Clare

Hello Clare

I don't know if you are aware that Edward PERRY and his wife Ann, who died in 1923, are both buried in Leaton Churchyard where they have a grave marked by a gravestone.  If you enter the churchyard from the car park and walk down the side of the wall towards the back of the church the grave is near the wall and almost level with the back of the church.  It is a white cross with curbs round the grave.

For information about the inquest your best source is the local newspapers. It should be easy to find. The 4th Jan 1929 was a Friday so the report of his death and the inquest will be in the weekly newspapers at the end of the following week.  You can ask at Shropshire Archives if they have a Coroner's Report but survival rates are a bit hit and miss.

I see that the Leaton Burial Register gives the address for both Ann and Edward PERRY as Mere Bank or Merebank, Bomere Heath. This name no longer exists so I can't tell you exactly where it was. We do have a modern road named Mere Close which may, or may not, give a clue.

Hi Michael

Thank you for your comment. That is very interesting as Edward was married to Septima Cavola when he died (he married her in 1925). I hadn't found an exact time of when Ann died but interesting that a current wife buried him with a former wife. I have cross referenced the address in the probate and it is the same Edward Perry definitely.

Thank you for telling me where the grave is - I had had a look but not managed to spot it yet so I will go and investigate.

Kind Regards, Clare
