I'm hoping someone with local knowledge can point me in the right direction. I'm in Australia and researching my husband's side of the family tree.

His great-grandmother Martha Harriett Roberts was born in 1876 in Cardeston, Shropshire. This information came from the full birth certificate of Martha's illegitimate son, Charles Edward Roberts, born in Sydney, Australia in 1894. Father was not identified. Charles was then adopted by a local (Eden) family and his death certificate records adoptive parents details.

I am waiting for full birth certificate to verify, but it looks like Martha also had an illegitmate daughter, Harriet Louise Roberts in Sydney in 1895. Father not identified (from summary).

I can't find any birth record for Martha Harriet Roberts anywhere in Shropshire in 1876 (or 1874-1878). There is a record for birth of Martha Roberts in Oswestry in 1876 - approx 16 miles from Cardeston. This is the only birth record for a Martha Roberts in 1876. There are 2 birth records for a 'Martha Roberts' born 1877 in Atcham and another 2 in Oswestry in 1874 and 1878.

Is it likely that a child would be born in Cardeston but registered in Oswestry? Or possibly she was born in Oswestry but spent most of her life in Cardeston before moving to Australia? I have tried putting together mini-trees based on each of the above births but haven't been able to verify which Martha is correct. There are too many Martha Roberts (no Martha Harriet) arriving in Australia from England to select one - same for marriage and death records.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for reading my 'block'.  Sue Boyd

Hello Sue

Whilst I can't answer your specific question I thought it might help you to explain the way in which records were compiled in the late 1800's when your Martha was born.

If she was born in the Parish of Cardeston then she would normally be baptised in that church.  You can search these records on the Find my Past (subscription) web site.

As well as being baptised in the local church she would also be 'Registered' with the local Registrar (after 1837) but the confusing thing is that Cardeston parish was within the Registration District of Atcham until 1935 after which it was in the Shrewsbury Registration District.  See the list of Registration Districts in Shropshire on the UK BMD web site.  Click on Atcham to see the list of Parishes it included.

Also have a look at GENUKI

Hope this is of some help.

Mike

Thanks Mike

I use Find My Past and haven't been able to find anything but I'll go back to Atcham births and try to flesh them out.
