Hello
The above is my gr gr grandmother, born circa 1818
,On the 1851 census she is head, unmarried, with a daughter age 7 and a border William WOOTTON whom she married in 1852 in the Parish Church in Madeley, her place of birth is also Madeley.
The 1861 census she is in Staffordshire with a son born in Tukes, Salop
The 1871 census her birthplace is Broseley, Salop
On her marriage certificate her father is David MORRIS A Fireman
Can anyone help please with information about her father or tell me where I can find the records for the three towns and also firemen at this time.
kind regards
Barbara Wootton
"Tukes" might mean (the) Tuckies in Broseley parish, on the rise just south of Jackfield.
THANK YOU MIKE AND MARTYN
I did wonder about David working at Coalport as a fireman for the kilns. Susannah and all the other family members worked in the industry all their lives in Stoke on Trent
Barbara
I also found 'Tuckies' in Jackfield, part of Broseley, and as it would seem from a census entry that the son, Thomas, gives Jackfield as his birthplace it would appear to be the likely explanation. I assume that the entry I found is for the right person as he is not living in the parental home.
Ann Lonsdale
I should have said that the census was for 1871. Thomas Wootton, apprentice hairdresser, was living in Stoke on Trent. He was the nephew of Thomas Hemsby, hairdresser.
Ann
hi
I have not found Thomas on the 1871 census just his mother Susannah, my gr grandfather Robert and his sister Elizabeth. I will look into it
thank you Ann
sorry martyn and mike think I sent my last reply to the wrong place

HELLO ALL
Thanks to your help I have found the birthplace of THOMAS WOOTTON SNR who married SUSANNAH MORRIS.On the 1851 census he put BUNBERRY DERBYSHIRE
Thanks to you saying TUKES should be TUKIES, JACKSFIELD and ANN finding a THOMAS on the 1871 census living with an aunt and uncle- and coming from JACKSFIELD I checked where his aunt was from and her maiden name ,she was SARAH WOOTTON from BAIRBERRY DERBYSHIRE. Later census she put SMISBY
Both had been misspelt and should have been BOUNDARY nr SMISBY DERBYSHIRE which ties in as their father WILLIAM was a JOCKEY and the horse racing stables for CALK ABBEY is in BOUNDARY
Many thanks to you all
BARBARA
Nice, Barb.
But so as not to perpetuate spelling errors: TUCKIES; JACKFIELD; CALKE Abbey.
Thanks Martyn
I got carried away in my excitement
I have been trying to find where WILLIAM rode for years and it seems that the owners of CALKE did very well with their horses, Gold cup winners the people from the National Trust tell me.
Horses are in my blood, my father was a keen race fan, he even took me to a meeting for my 21st birthday( how sad is that) I did have a choice though but if it ment being near horses I loved it, when I was 8 years old I would wait for the milkman at the end of the lane so that I could drive the cart up to the top. so the love has passed down the line
Many thanks
Barbara
Hello Barbara
As far as I am aware we do not have a place named Tukes in Shropshire so this is probably phonetic spelling for the actual place.
With regard to David MORRIS a Fireman I don't think you should not be thinking of firemen who go to fires in large red vehicles. Instead you should probably be thinking of someone who tends or stokes a fire, possibly an early railway fireman or or some sort of static machine with a fire to heat something.
You can view information about Broseley on the Broseley Local History Society web site but the main source of records for Broseley and Madeley (modern spelling) is Shropshire Archives at Shrewsbury.
