I am interested in tracing TAYLOR's and REA's c.1700s- 1800s in particular a Harriet TAYLOR b.c 1801 Ludlow or Stanton Lacy and it appears her siblings may have all been born at Richards Castle. I believe Harriet's parents may have been Thomas TAYLOR and Elizabeth REA .

Harriet may have had an illegitimate son John as a John [12yrs 1841 Census] and Harriet lived with Harriet's brother Edward and his wife Harrie/ot REA and appear in the [Culmington] 1841 and 1851 census' after which John no longer appears; he was a shoemaker in the 1851 census and birth place say flintsham Herefordshire; I have found no other traces that may match John after 1851. 1861 census shows , Edward's wife Harrie/ot and sister Harriet are joined by Sussanah REA Edward's sister in law. Edward died c1865 and  both Harriets and Decima REA are in the 1871 census still in Culmington. I suspect Edward's wife Harrie/ot died 1871 and Edward's sister Harriet perhaps John's mother died in 1873. There is a probate entry for possibly both Harriet's.

In the same area there are several TAYLORs over a couple of generations who were shoemakers including a Thomas who may have been Harriet and Edward's father, William and Richard who may have also been related.

I have been searching for John Taylor who arrived in Australia c1851-52 who is said to be born Herefortshire/Shropeshire on different certificates here, John's occupation was a shoemaker before becoming a tenant farmer. One of his daughter was named Harriet and the Rea name is perpetuated throughout the generations as a Christian Name. There were no requirements to document John's parents names in his early BDM records here so no record exists to date that would assist me also at this stage how and when John actually arrived is not know either though I think I am pretty safe in assuming he came by boat.

If anyone can tell me about Flintsham and its parishes I might be able to trace via those records.

Any assistance would be gratefully received and reciprocated if possible.

Thanks from the land down under Lyn

Hello Lyn, You don't say when John was born, but when I looked for Flintsham in Herefordshire on a website which details place names (www.melocki.org.uk) it said the following:

Flintsham (Court or Square, Titley)

So when I looked for baptisms on familysearch.org I was interested to see the following entry:

John Taylor, ,Son of Edward Taylor and Elizabeth, Baptised at Titley, Herefordshire 12th April 1827.

I obviously have no idea if this is your John, but thought you might be interested!

All the very best, Jason Key.

PS If you look on google maps for Flintsham you will find that there is a Lower Flintsham and a Flintsham Pool at Titley. It's near Presteigne/ Kington and not that far from the South Shropshire border.
