I'm researching my family history and have traced back to Thomas Cadwallader (1770 - 1816) of Ludlow who was married to Charlotte Barkley/Barclay (1779 - 1851) but can't find any Cadwalladers in Ludlow previous to this (except for a couple between 1500-1690-ish).

Does anyone know of any possible links to the Cadwalladers of Shifnal or Clunbury please?

Thomas's grandson John (1839-1918) was a journeyman pastrycook who ended up as a confectioner in Aston, Birmingham, (married to Sarah Lucas).

Hello Lauren

Can you tell us why you think Thomas CADWALLADER was from Ludlow and when and where he married Charlotte BARKLEY / BARCLAY?

Hi Mike,

There is a Thomas Cadwallader listed as a maltster/inn keeper in Ludlow, also Thomas Cadwallader Snr is mentioned in a few transactions such as this one from the National Archives:  https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/2727ecca-7ee6-47d6-a...

Another search shows "Thomas" to be buried in St Lawrence's Graveyard.

I found the details of Charlotte in the Ludlow register as being the mother of Thomas's son Richard, so I assume they were married! Richard is my x3 great grandfather.

I'm also trying to find out if Thomas had a son named William born in 1788.

Regarding the Shifnal connection, my great grandmother Edith (John the pastrycook's daughter) used to go visiting people in Shifnal, so I assume they were relatives.

Thanks!

Lauren

Lauren,

After twenty years there is mention of Charlotte Barclay Cadwallader!!!! and now i've seen an image that gives her baptism on 12 November 1773, Bad news is she is described as a bastard. Still unable to find a trace of her marriage to Thomas.

Richard (1802-1853) is my 3x great grandfather.    His father Thomas was a blacksmith of Mill Street married to Charlotte Barclay (1779-1851) who had four children, Thomas. Richard, Ann and William.

After his death in 1816 there are many entries in local directories of Charlotte continuing the trade of blacksmith from premises in Mill Street located between 'Hop Pole' and 'Blue Boar' previously Three Tuns' maybe.  Charlotte died 1851 in Hosier's Almhouses

The Thomas, maltster, in 1828 may well be his son.

My line continues from Sarah Lucas's daughter Leah who I knew very well and visited often at her home near Villa Park in Aston.

Cousin!

I'm descended from Edith. Wow!

Are you aware of the connection to George Elliot and Middlemarch?

sorry, haven't been on here recently!

It seems that over time, the family name changed to Cadwallader from Cadwallider (also known as Wallett)

"Thomas the son of Richard Cadwallider alias Wallet of Oakengate, Collier.
Elizabeth his wife was born and baptised 14th October 1770"

There may also be a connection to a William Cadwallader (1788-1816) who married Mary Herrington (1786-1815)

William (1788-1816) may be Thomas's half brother as it would appear that Thomas's father Richard Cadwallider (1744-1833) married his mother Elizabeth (surname unknown) who died 1778.

Richard is then is listed as having 2 sons by a woman named Ann: William was born in 1788 and there is mention of another son (?)Thomas

Richard Cadwallider born 18/11/1744, baptised 25/11/1744, died Ludlow 1833
