I am trying to trace information regarding Thomas EDWARDS, who was born in Church Stretton in 1769 and died in 1836. (he most likely died  in Church Stretton, since he was living there in 1835 when he made his will). He had 2 brothers, James and George and a sister Elizabeth, who married Benjamin GILLOTT in Church Stretton in 1799. I am especially interested in discovering the names of his parents, but any information would be gratefully received.

Firstly, I assume you have obtained details of Thomas's brothers and sister from his Will, therefore I wonder why you say he resided in Church Stretton in 1835 when his Will said he resided in Kingston upon Hull?  Secondly I question his birth in 1769 - I see another researcher has put this date on Ancestry but I believe it to be incorrect.  I believe Thomas was baptised in Church Stretton on 15th September 1782, the son of Joseph Edwards and Ann (née Robinson), the 4th of 7 born between 1774 and 1791.  Brother George was bapt. 29th Aug 1785 and James was bapt. 25th Sept 1791.  Sister Elizabeth was bapt. 22nd Dec 1774.  As you say she married Benjamin Gillott in 1799; they had two sons and two daughters, including the Benjamin mentioned in the WIll.  Joseph and Ann lived in Little Stretton.  I have not been able to trace the marriage of Joseph and Ann.  Joseph and Ann were buried at Church Stretton in 1805 and 1833 respectively.  Ann was the daughter of Edward Robinson (1781-1760) and Elizabeth (née Bridgman), baptised in Church Stretton in 1751; I am descended from her brother Thomas. Edward Robinson was the son of Edward Robinson (died 1745) and Elizabeth Bowen, married at Church Stretton in 1714.  That's as far back as I go on the Robinson line.

Thanks for that Russell. I was researching this for a lady in Essex, who had been given my name as a member of Church Stretton LHG. She is, I think, the same person as the researcher on Ancestry that you mention and I took the 1769 birth date from the notes she sent me. Having failed to find the birth in 1769, I was studying the parish records for years either side, but hadn't expected the date to be 13 years adrift.

The lady in question believes her late mother-in-law was descended from Thomas's brother James and she  left a number of papers relating to Thomas which may be of interest to you. If you wish, I can put the two of you in contact with each other to share your information and save me again ploughing over ground which you have already covered.
