I recently acquired a copy of the will of my 8 x Great Grandfather, William Cherrington of Kynnersley (died 1696, aged approx 40, married to Ruth Symmonds also of Kynnersley) from the Lichfield Record Office (http://www.staffsnameindexes.org.uk/default.aspx)

The handwriting and differences in language are making the translating of the will a slow and steady job, but I've worked out the important parts with one exception: There is one name mentioned in the paragraph which names William's children which I can find absolutely no mention of in any online records.

These children: William, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Andrew, Walter and Francis were all born between 1679 and 1691 and show up in all the usual searches for birth/baptism records. The first name on the list (see attached image - the name in the red box), which looks like 'Chrysagon', does not show up in any search.
What I want to know is whether anyone can shed any light on this name? A Google search doesn't provide any useful info. Is it even a name? Could it be a word of some kind?

I also can't find any record of William himself until his death, so I'm wondering if there are some records missing or unpublished from the Kynnersley registers which may provide some clues.

Any help would be much appreciated!

1 Dec 1713 there is a will at Lichfield for a Chrysogan/Chrisogon STORY from Newport which is quite close to Kynnersley.

Thanks, I thought you had put me on to a decent lead there but it seems this Chrisogon/Chrysogon Story is too old to be the daughter of William, as I believe he was born around 1655.

Chrisogon Story had (at least) two children, with christening dates of 1652 and 1655, according to FamilySearch:

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname...

On the plus side, this confirms Chrysagon/Chrysogon is a name, and a female one at that. Progress!

*edit*
According to this link, Chrysogon was/is a male or female name.

Has anybody else come across this name around the Shropshire area?

Thanks - another possible lead.

I've just found a couple of Chrysagons in the Wem records as well.

I'l look into all of these tomorrow.

In the will, the children are listed in order of age (oldest first), meaning Chrysagon was either the eldest or second eldest. The eldest (surviving) son, William jnr is mentioned in detail earlier in the will as the main benefactor, and he was baptised in 1679.
There was also another, earlier William who was born and died in 1676. Therefore Chrysagon, by my estimations, was probably born either before the first, deceased William (1674/5), between the two Willliams (1677/8) or between the surviving William and Andrew (which would have to be 1680). This would mean that the Chrysagon Blakemore would just about be old enough to have got married, changed her name from Cherrington to Blakemore, moved away and died...

*edit*

...I've just realised - Chrysagon Blakemore died (1695) before this will was executed in 1696. I guess that would mean there is probably no link?
