Hello Sandra

The subscription web sites will only tell you the quarter of the year in which her death was registered which as you would expect in your case is Jan-Feb-Mar 1904 in the Atcham Registration District age 89 Volume No: 6A Page No: 487.

Your only way to get the exact date is to purchase a copy of the Death Certificate using the above reference numbers.  Her death was registered in the name of Ann SPREAD (no 'e' on Ann).

It is possible that she died late December 1903 but the death was not registered until the beginning of January 1904.

Hello Sandra

It would appear that officialdom was a bit more relaxed in 1904 than it is now. These days you can't have a burial / cremation until you have a death certificate but in Ann's case she was buried before anyone got round to doing the paper work. So we have,
died 5 Jan
buried 8 Jan
registered 14 Jan

Uffington was, and still is, only a small village. It may well be that the houses were not named in 1904 - they certainly wouldn't have been numbered then and aren't now.

I notice that the 1901 census says she was living in 'Cottage on Hill' so that eliminates those not on the hill.  1891 and 1871 census says 'Hill Cottage'. 1881 census says 'Haughmond Hill'. If you look at each census entry and then look at two or three entries before and after you should be able to follow the census enumerators route where he names places that can be located on a large scale map. Hopefully this might allow you to home in on the exact location.  You might need to buy an A3 or A4 photocopy of the Ordnance Survey map of the area for about 1900 at a scale of 25" to 1 mile (1:2,500) so you have something that shows every property in the area. Shropshire Archives have these.

You should note that in each census above Ann was living in Upton Magna parish not Uffington parish so that gives you a line to work to. See the parish boundary on the Church of England web site - a church near you.

Hi Sandra,

I've been following your post for a while now and wonder if you have any information on any children Nancy and Thomas might have had? I've hit a brick wall with my research!

Information from 1886 marriage cert for my gt-grandfather Joseph Spragg, born c1841, (can't find a birth listing) widow, (no info on previous marriage), living in Somerwood, his father was Thomas Spragg deceased. he married Sarah Tipton,

I was wondering with the Haughmond Hill and Somerwood being adjacent is there any family connection?

Yes Nancy Spraggs home, Hill Cottage/Haughmond Cottage was on the side of Haughmond Hill half way between Upton Magna and Uffington so it must have been in Upton Magna parish. It is a long time since I started my research so I will have to go the records office and look up the cencus returns again! she was still living in the cottage in the 1901 census, but I know she was brought down to the village in the winter.

In the 1901 census it lists a Helen Peplow niece living with her, a Ellen Peplow, niece was named as informant on her death certificate.  Now I will have to find out if it is Helen or Ellen.

Hello John - the children I have for Ann and Thomas Spread - all born on Haughmond Hill are

William   8.1.1843

John 17.7.1845

Elizabeth 23.5.1847

Thomas 6.1.1850

Leonard 28.3.1852

Louisa 3.9.1854

Thomas Spragg and Ann  (Barnett) were married 6.2.1842

Thomas was the son of William Spragg and Ann (Mofs) married 25.9.1782 at Upton Magna Church.

Prior to the 1841 census the were called Spragg after this date they are referred to as Spread don't know why this happened.

Many thanks Sandra for the information. It seems there were many Spraggs in Shropshire at that time so I'll keep searching for the right family.

        Sandra,

May I make the suggestion that Ann Mofs should read Ann Moss, double ss , at the time 1782, when written in long hand by a cleric  appeared as fs.

            Hello,

It may help Sandra if firstly you tell us where you got this information, Mofs, have you seen it written in longhand or have you just picked it up from another researcher?

Too many times we go over ground looking for helpful information that people already have.

Hello
As I stated it is many years 17/18 since I started my research on the people who lived on the hill, I am sure I got this information from Upton Magna Church records which were written in long hand.

             Sandra,

From what I can see on Upton Magna birth and marriage records is the following:-

There was a William Spragg b/c 14th. June 1807 Parents were William and Anne Spragg

also           a Thomas Spragg b/c 12th. Aug 1813 Parents were William and Anne Spragg

The only other reference was what appears to be the marriage of their parents:-

William Spragg and Anne Mops 26th. Sept. 1802 at Upton Magna.

Regret can't find any reference to a marriage of a

Thomas or William Spragg at Upton Magna 25th. Sept. 1782.

Only other suggestion I can make is a trip to the church and find out if the records are still held there, otherwise a trip into town and visit the records office and ask to see the originals.

        Gulielmus.

Hello Sandra

Following on from the messages of Gulielmus above I think the name you have written as Mofs is almost certainly Moss. If you were able to go back to the original record where you saw it you would still see Mofs because that will be the way it had been written but as Gulielmus says the old scribes used to write 'fs' instead of 'ss'.

With reference to the Upton Magna marriages there is a transcript at Shropshire Archives but that only goes up to 1753 so that is the likely cut off date for Family Search. The original Upton Magna marriage registers 1754-1812 are on microfiche 24-30 at Shropshire Archives. Scroll to the bottom of this page and select the 'parish registers' link for a list.

Hello Mike

I have looked through my records and have definately written - Recorded from the Rocords Office,- William Spragg and Ann Mofs married 26th September1782

But your record of 25th September 1802 sounds correct, don't know how I got 1782

I see you have spelt it Mops now is it Moffs/Mops or Moss?

Hello Sandra

It appears that the Family Search web site has interpreted the spelling as MOPS and that is what Gulielmus has copied above.

I suggest you visit Shropshire Archives and ask one of the archivists to have a look at the entry and give their judgement on its best interpretation.  There is no black and white answer to this, in the end it is opinion.

Mike
