My 2 x great grand uncle, Adam Albert Weale (1863-1954). served as Mayor of Bridgnorth, as did his wife, Phoebe Matilda (1861-1951), does anyone know where I can access details of when they actually held the office?

Resuming research after a few years, I have quite a few BMDs etc, of the Weale family, the details of which I am happy to share, so please let me know if you are researching the Weale family.

Regards

Hi Paul,

There is a lot of information available about the WEALE families in Bridgnorth.

All the previous Mayors of Bridgnorth since 1835 are listed on several boards mounted in the Town Hall.

Adam Albert WEALE was Mayor from 9th November 1926 and a second term from 9th November 1927. Mrs Pheobe Matilda WEALE was Mayor from 9th November 1932 for one year.

I have the details of 28 WEALE burials in Bridgnorth Municipal Cemetery including Adam Albert WEALE and Pheobe Matilda.

Also have a newspaper article and a large photograph about the connected BAKER and WEALE families of Listley Street if that is your family line? The family included a George WEALE 1790 to 1860, a Baker by trade. Several years ago I assisted a lady researching that family.

In the 20th February 1976 issue of the local newspaper, the Bridgnorth Journal, there was an article and photo about Mrs WEALE who was the first female Mayor of Bridgnorth in 1932 and her husband. I could obtain a copy if required.

Part of the one board is shown below.

Hope that helps,

Gwynne

Hi Gwynne, Many thanks for your helpful responese, I believe the photo of Adam Weale was taken at the top of the Cartway, It was a fish and chip/kebab shop when I last visited Bridgnorth. I would be interested in the details of any Weales buried in Bridgnorth. I have some records from Shropshire Archives regarding the death of Maud Clara Weale, age 2, in 1896, which I am currently looking at, also the charge of attempted suicide against her mother, Clara, three years later.

I'll be in touch, off out for the day today, before the weather changes!

Regards Paul

WEALE family graves in Bridgnorth Municipal Cemetery.

At least ten of the burials shown in yellow below are known to be connected to your ancestors William WEALE 1822 – 1887 and Sarah.

I’ve checked all the grave locations and apart from two plots marked * unfortunately no memorial headstones exist.

You will need to scroll across to see the entire width.

Hi Paul,

I’ve extracted thousands of names and interesting facts from the local newspaper ‘The Bridgnorth Journal’ from 1852 onwards and published the information in three books.

Here are the mentions of the WEALE family. More detailed information is generally available in the newspaper. The date shown is the publication date.

At least the five records shown in yellow are known to be connected to your ancestor William WEALE 1822 – 1887 and Sarah.

Hope that helps,

Gwynne

Hi Gwynne,

Thank yo so much for posting the details about the Weale family, I have some additional details for John Beniah Weale, his death certificate records him dying "on The Queen's Highway" in Lowestoft, apparently after a drinking session. At the inquest his wife, Lucy, reported that "he cared nothing for food and shelter, just wanted to drink, the whole family is the same".

I note that your family research includes the Lancashire area for which I have quite a few volumes of parish registers issued by the Lancashire Parish Register Society, if I can return the favour please let me know the names and areas of interest.

Kind regards

Paul

Hi Paul,

Find my Past have the newspaper article about the fatal scolding of the 6 month old  (not age 2 as you thought) Maud Clara WEALE in 1896. Also the attempted suicide of her mother in 1899.

Regards,

Gwynne

Hi Paul,

Glad to help. I try to assist with local Bridgnorth records that most people can’t access and Ancestry hasn’t got – yet!!

In my database of approx. 22,000 Bridgnorth people from sixty five various sources; I also have these entries for your WEALE ancestors.

Advertisement in an 1886 Bridgnorth Almanack.

Albert Weale was recorded as a Hairdresser in New Market Buildings in 1885.

Albert Adam Weale was recorded as a Hairdresser, Perfumer and Fancy Goods Dealer. Emigration Agent in New Market Buildings in 1888.

Albert Adam Weale was a Hairdresser at No.4 Waterloo Terrace 1917 – 1937.

Both Alderman A.A WEALE and Councillor Mrs Weale were on the General Committee for the Bridgnorth 1930 Carnival.

Your mention yesterday of Clara WEALE rang a bell in my memory. In January 2023  a ‘Mike’ enquired on this message forum about his great, great grandfather “Albert Edward Weale Alveley Area” We were able to offer him some assistance.

So you are both researching the same family.

Use the search box at the top of the page and search for that earlier thread.

Thanks for the offer of Lancashire records but I drew a line under that research decades ago

Regards,

Gwynne
