Looking for incident information on Samuel Rigby, 23, who was killed? at Dock Meadow Pit, Ketley and story reported in the Wellington Journal, 20 Oct 1855. Where would I find the Journal archive?

Hello John

You should be able to see copies of the Wellington Journal at Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury or the Newspaper Library in London although you should check before hand that they have copies for the specific date that you require before travelling to either.

If Samuel RIGBY was killed in a pit accident I would have expected there to have been an Inquest into his death but I can't see any reference to any such Inquest in the Quarter Sessions Index produced on CD by Shropshire FHS. The newspaper article may clear this up otherwise his death certificate would include a reference to any Inquest if one was held.

John,

You may already be aware of the entry recording the death of an S Rigby at Ketley pit on 15 October 1855 on the Coalmining History Resource Centre website at  www.cmhrc.co.uk

Although the detail is relatively superficial, the comment in the notes section - to the effect that "The butty threw a slab down the pit", may hold the key to the cause of his death.

Incidentally, although there may be no family connection, there is also a record for the death of a J Rigby in January 1862 at a different Wellington pit.

Many thanks Mike and Peter for your posts and links. I am aiming to have a trip to Shrewsbury this month so will get in contact with Shropshire Archives before I travel.
