I'm researching the HARRIS family from Madeley in 18th/19th Century for some US cousins. I originally researched the family in 2010 using IGI (now known as Familysearch) as my main source and came up with a Madeley baptism for Wiliam HARRIS in 1744, the son of Caleb and Mary HARRIS.  However, in an attempt to validate the record I've now looked at the images of the Parish Registers on the Findmypast website, and there is no trace of William. There are six other children with parents names of Caleb and Mary HARRIS in the period 1740-59, but no William. William can still be found on Familysearch, but only in a Pedigree Resource File, submitted by a private individual.

Therefore I am wondering if Wiliam  was omitted from the Parish Register, but appears in the Bishop's Transcripts. So my question is: does anyone know if Bishops Transcripts exist for parish of Madeley for the year 1744? And if so where are they stored?

Regards

Hello Phil

If you go back to Family Search and select Search, then on the page that opens select Catalog (US spelling) at the top and put Madeley in the Place box then select Madeley, Shropshire from the list that appears and click search you will see a list of the records available in Family Search.

Click on 'Church records (15)' and you will see a list of available records.  The fourth down refers to BTs and clicking on that brings up more details with Baptisms 1744 being included in the first entry.

It is very frustrating when you have found an entry which cannot be verified in any actual records leaving you wondering whether someone has had access to some other information, like a family bible, or whether it has just been dreamt up to fill the space.  In many cases we will never know.
