Hi

Looking for help and possible look up please

I am living in Ireland and researching my family history. One of the branchs I am researching is of a Perkins's and Cooke family from Shropshire who lived around Wem, Cleobury Mortimer during the 1700 - 1800's

The following is what I know:

William PERKINS Census 1841 - 1871 states he was born Lower Mitton, Worchestershire about 1797 and married to Jane born 1804/5.  William and Jane raised their family in Cleobury Mortimer and both died there. William was a bricklayer.

I need three look ups:-

  • If at all possible could somebody please see if there was a marriage of a William Perkins and Jane around 1827 in the parish records of Cleobury Mortimer. (I have found only one marriage of a William Perkins to a Jane but that was in Kingswinford and only a few weeks before the birth of their first child. The marriage was to a Jane COOK this was kindly confirmed by a man from the Worchester look up exchange).
  • I found a Jane COOK born 1804 to Arthur and Elizabeth COOK in Upton-Waters/Wem. Arthur COOK (born 1772 Whitchurch) married an Elizabeth FRONTBACK in 1793 in Whitchurch. I cannot find Elizabeth's family and am almost positive that her name 'Frontback' has been incorrectly transcribed. If it is possible could someone look up the marriage in the original records for the Whitchurch parish to see if there is an alternative name i.e Fromton.
  • Arthur COOKS parents are John COOK and Elizabeth. I cannot find a marraige for these two I am hoping that they too are in the Whitchurch records.

I would really appreciate the help.

yours

Clare

Cleobury Mortimer marriages are in the IGI to 1861.

However, your marriage is out of county:

As Jane died between the 1841 and 1851 census, all we really know about her is her first name, an approximate year of birth, and that she was apparently born in Shropshire. As David has found that Cleobury Mortimer marriages are on FamilySearch for the period when Jane and William would likely have married, it appears that the marriage took place elsewhere and it could take some time and patience to track it down. Kingswinford in Staffordshire is some distance from where either William or Jane are known to have lived and so the marriage there does not look promising (although it can't be ruled out without finding records for another William Perkins and Jane who match up with that marriage more convincingly).

Getting a birth certificate for one of the couple's children born after 1837 would confirm Jane's maiden surname and that might enable her birth (and from there perhaps the marriage) to be tracked down. The birth of Emma Perkins, for example, was registered at Cleobury Mortimer in the June quarter of 1840, volume 18, page 37. This should be enough information for you to order a copy of her birth certificate from the GRO.

From your tree on Ancestry I see that you have sourced Jane Cooke's baptism (at Wem, Edstaston or Newton, definitely not Waters Upton) from Ancestry's Shropshire Parish Records. Those records have been extracted from published transcripts of a selection of Shropshire parish registers and compiled into a database. Coverage of Shropshire is far from complete, so this Jane Cook (if William's wife was in fact of that name) is not necessarily the one you are looking for. Indeed, since the Shropshire Burials Index shows the burial at Wem, on 4 April 1824, of a 19-year-old Jane Cooke, I would say that she was not the Jane you are looking for.

Thanks Steve,  that is great help.  I was never sure of Jane's last name so will definitely look for a birth cert for one of her children.

Cheers
