I live in Matagorda County, Texas and am researching William Prissick, who lived in our county 1841 - 1881. The information that I have says that he was born in County Shropshire, England at his father's farm called Polmer seven miles from Shrewsburg, in 1805. His mother's maiden name was Weaver. At age 21 he was apprenticed in Liverpool. His story in the USA is unusual. He actually served in the Texas Legislature in the late 1800s. More about him can soon be viewed at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txmatago/family_prissick.htm
I am seeking some information about his early life before he moved to the US about 1831. Possibly cemetery information on his parents, etc. If there is anyone in the socity who is related to the family, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you,
Carol Sue Gibbs

Parents were James Prissick and Mary Weaver who married under licence at Habberley on December 14th 1796. I assume that was Mary's parish as Jame's parish is registered as Pontesbury. Witnesses were John Laurence Jnr and Richard Weaver.
Habberley is about 1 1/2 miles south of Pontesbury.
That article is a transcription of the report printed in Galveston Daily News, Sunday, January 08, 1882.
There are spelling mistakes in both the original article and transcription.
His parents moved to Seacombe in Cheshire according to the article.
That is where I found their deaths.

Looking at the original entries in the Parish Register and Bishops Transcripts,
James is living in Tiverton at the time of his death and Mary at Seacombe.
I have found his Mother's will and probate but it would take some time to translate. They did not use punctuation in the PCC Wills. I can see she left some money to William and the witnesses are Ann Eliza Glynn and Elizabeth Richardson.

A few bits extra. Polemere is just south of the B 4386 road from Shrewsbury to Montgomery, closer to the village of Yockleton rather than to the centre of the large parish of Pontesbury.
An earlier William Prissick was an attorney / solicitor in Shrewsbury. He was admitted a burgess in 1796 as William Prissick esquire, but with no information as to his father. He was buried at St Chad's, Shrewsbury 24.12.1823 aged 61, as of College Hill. There are no other entries for the surname in the SFHS Burials Index.
That age and date fits with the baptism of a WP in Stainton-in-Cleveland, north Yorks, son of a William Prissick who married Dinah Carter 27.7.1756.
They had also a James in 1769, who fits with Mark's later info on the Shropshire James.
I have in the past come across many references to William the attorney in Shropshire Archives's online catalogue - archives.shropshire.gov.uk . I think that he was in partnership with William Asterley.
If our poster wishes to obtain a copy of the licence (or more correctly the bond and allegations) for that marriage of Habberley from Herefordshire Record Office, an agent is needed - no staff service. I would suggest Mr Chris Potter, of Ludlow, a member of SFHS. E-mail cfrpotter@clara.co.uk ' Also he has an index of Shropshire Wills proved at Hereford up to 1857. Hereford diocese covered much of the south of Shropshire.
I may be wrong about WILLIAM Asterley.
The Will of William Prissick of Shrewsbury (who may have been brother of James) was proved 30.12.1823 in PCC. This was until 1858 the central, rather than diocesan, probate court for southern England, includiung Wales. Reference PROB11/1679. It can be bought online for £3-50. www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline .

Hello Carol, I suppose you already have William's baptism record but here it is just in case!
Saint Georges Church Pontesbury.
1805 October the 22nd.
Willm. s of James and Mary Prissick ... bap.
( I was baptised at the same church in 1972!)
Best wishes, Jason Key
Just noticed that you already know this!
and I have to say, you couldn't ask for much better help than that!! Nice job guys.
Looks like his birth parish was Pontesbury. That is about 8 miles from Shrewsbury, not Shrewsburg.
